European Rallycross Champion Sverre Isachsen Joins Subaru Rally Team USA at X Games 16

Subaru Rally Team USA announced today the selection of Sverre Isachsen of Norway, the defending FIA European Rallycross Champion, to fill the team's guest driver slot at the 2010 ESPN Summer X Games 16 in Los Angeles, California on July 31st. Isachsen will join Subaru Rally Team USA star drivers Travis Pastrana and Dave Mirra for the debut of SuperRally at the X Games, each will drive a 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI modified for Rallycross with an over 550 horsepower Boxer engine and Symmetrical All Wheel Drive.



"I'm very excited to come to a huge event like the Summer X Games and to have the opportunity to be teammates to legends like Pastrana and Mirra is very special," said Isachsen. "I think a Rallycross style event will fit perfectly with the X Games because it is a very entertaining motorsport with a lot of action. Rallycross has traditionally been a European motorsport, but I think the concept can be big in the USA and I'm happy to be a part of the very first Rallycross event in America!"

Isachsen was the Norwegian Rallycross Champion in 1999, 2000 and 2004 and debuted in the top level FIA European Rallycross Championship (the ERC) in 2002. After finishing fourth in the ERC standings three years in a row (2006-2008) Isachsen achieved ultimate success last year and was crowned the ERC Champion. His title defense in 2010 has been exceptional so far and Sverre leads the 2010 ERC standings after four of ten rounds, having won two events outright this year already.

The new format should prove especially exciting for America fans as the rally cars will bump, jump and slide together in a furious sprint of just a few short laps. Subaru drivers Pastrana and Mirra will compete in both Rally Car Racing and SuperRally and Isachsen will focus exclusively on SuperRally.

Although Isachsen will be the most experienced and accomplished Rallycross driver at X Games 16 he is realistic about the challenge ahead. "The track, the car and the competitors will be new for me, so let's just see how it goes!"

Since 2006 the ESPN X Games has featured the Rally Car Racing event as part of multi-sport lineup that includes action sports such as skateboarding, freestyle motocross and BMX. The inclusion of rallying at the X Games with its live television coverage and a live audience of tens of thousands has helped rallying achieve widespread awareness and popularity in America over the past four years. Subaru has earned nine of the 13 possible medals in the past four X Games Rally Car Racing events. The event features two rally cars at a time running on a stadium based parallel course, which prevents the cars from direct contact. ESPN adds SuperRally for the first time this year modeled after the successful FIA European Rallycross Championship.

Three additional exhibition style events are planned by sanctioning body Rally America later this year at New Jersey Motorsports Park, with plans for multi-venue national series in 2011. Isachsen will play a key role in helping provide Rallycross training and advice to SRTUSA team drivers as well as help introduce his sport to American fans. Subaru Rally Team USA has won the Rally America National Championship title for the past four years (2006 - 2009).

Subaru Releases Test Footage of Advanced Subaru WRX STI Research and Development from Nurburgring, Germany
CHERRY HILL, N.J., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru today released footage covering advanced research and development carried out at the Nurburgring's racetrack in Germany, using a 2011MY Subaru WRX STI 4-door (sedan) test vehicle. Subaru has been using the famous Nordschleife course since 1992 for advanced R&D as well as tests of the WRX and WRX STI models. The video uploaded on the Subaru Global Site www.subaru-global.com features this year's development work. It is presented as a highlight of Subaru's persistent effort to stretch vehicle performance to unprecedented levels.

The concept of the 2011MY WRX STI is "The Fastest WRX STI Ever." At Subaru, the phrase "Fastest" refers to more than just top speed or maximum engine output. It implies driving with confidence. The WRX STI can be taken to its "fastest ever" performance by providing the driver with total driving control with confidence. Major upgrades to the 2011MY WRX STI focused on the chassis and suspension set-up, and tests at the Nurburgring demonstrated the supreme overall dynamics and linear behavior of the new STI. Tommi Makinen, the legendary four-time World Rally Champion, piloted the test vehicle for the development. For 2011MY, both models receive equipment enhancements including manual-folding exterior mirrors. Also, models equipped with harman/kardon audio (available on Premium models and standard on Limited models) now feature XM® Satellite Radio and a three-month trial subscription.

A new color, Caramel Bronze Pearl, replaces Harvest Gold Metallic on both models and is paired with an Ivory interior. Ruby Red Pearl, previously only available on the Legacy and Tribeca, is now available on the Outback and comes also with an Ivory interior.

Limited trim models are subject to a $300 price increase due to the inclusion of XM Satellite Radio. The Legacy 2.5i Limited is now $25,295 while the Legacy 3.6R Limited is $28,295.

For the 2011 model year, the Legacy 2.5GT sports sedan will be offered exclusively in Limited trim. It now includes a standard power moonroof as well as XM Satellite Radio, fog lights, new simulated carbon-fiber dashboard trim, silver contrast seat and armrest stitching, and aluminum pedals. It comes with a starting price of $31,395, an increase of only $405, which still keeps it priced well under most competitors' offerings.

2011 Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback, Motor Trend's 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year, receives a modest $200 price increase with the Outback 2.5i now starting at $23,195 and the Outback 2.5i Premium priced at $24,495, still keeping the cost well under most mid-size crossover or wagon competitors.

A new feature for Outback models, a Rear Vision Camera, is added to Premium and Limited models - bundled with the Power Moonroof Package. The exclusive Rear Vision Camera includes an Auto-dim mirror with Homelink, compass display and a 3.3 inch hi-resolution display in the mirror. This convenience upgrade adds $450 to any Outback that features a Power Moonroof.

The Outback 2.5i Limited, with standard Lineartronic CVT, now starts at $28,495 while the six-cylinder Outback 3.6R is also competitively priced at $28,195. The Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited, which continues to be in high demand, now has a starting price of $31,495 and includes standard XM Satellite Radio.

Engineering Excellence - total vehicle concept and execution; clever solutions to packaging, manufacturing and dynamics issues; cost-effective tech that benefits the consumer.
Intended Function - how well the vehicle does the job its planners, designers, and engineers intended it to do.
Efficiency - low fuel consumption and carbon footprint, relative to the vehicle's competitive set.
Safety - a vehicle's ability to help the driver avoid a crash, as well as the secondary safety measures that protect its occupants from harm during a crash.
Value - competitive price and equipment levels, measured against those of vehicles in the same market segment.



MOTOR TREND's Sport/Utility of the Year is not a comparison test and is only open to all-new or substantially upgraded vehicles that have gone on sale in the 12 months from November 1 of the previous year. MOTOR TREND looks for the pick of each year's crop of new SUV's, and does not revisit vehicles that have been on sale for the past few years.

Subaru Launches One-of-a-Kind Infomercial

"Spokes Skunk" Reveals a Sparkling New Spot with Outback Detergent


Cherry Hill NJ, September 30, 2009 -- Subaru of America, Inc. has debuted a unique communication to support the launch of the company's 2010 Subaru Outback. The work features an infomercial on Outback detergent and a spokes skunk.

The infomercial, showing on www.outbackdetergent.com, is a parody of the advertising usually seen on retail selling television channels and highlights the ways owners of the all-wheel drive Subaru Outback use their vehicle to its fullest capabilities, and get dirty as they lead their active lives. With a wink to the prowess of many home shopping channel products, the spot shows how Outback detergent can remove even the toughest of stains in an amazingly short time. Listing its powers, Outback detergent promises to rid clothes of: cricket foam, pond scum, tree sap, squirrel residue, fish xslime, volcanic ash, musk, raccoon prints, Russian dressing and aggressive perspiration. Visitors to the website can discover how to obtain their own bottle of the uniquely-formulated, environmentally-friendly detergent from their local Subaru dealer.

"Stinky" the spokes skunk was hired to bring a touch of the great outdoors to the commercial. Speaking from his studio trailer after filming, Stinky said: "I was thrilled to work with such a great outdoors brand as Subaru. There aren't too many roles for a working cartoon skunk since the days of the great Le Pew, so when this role came up I leapt at it. I am used to seeing Subarus on the trailheads where I live so I felt very at home with the brand. I hope to have the chance to work with Subaru again as long as I can work on controlling my scenting."

Coined as disruption marketing and developed by Subaru of America's agency of record, Carmichael Lynch of Minn., the infomercial is designed to expand the reach of the brand and will run in stores, on-air, on www.subaru.com and in targeted direct communication.

-- The Company Posted a 34-Percent Increase in Sales for July --

Cherry Hill, N.J., August 3, 2009 – Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that it had its best sales month ever with a 34-percent increase in sales in July. The company sold 21,839 units this July versus 16,271 units in July 2008 and had a 4-percent gain year-over-year. Subaru sales for July 2009 also showed a 17-percent increase over June 2009 Subaru sales.

The introduction of the new 2010 Subaru Legacy and Outback vehicles kept the momentum going for the car company as it continues to outpace the industry. The Subaru Legacy posted a 34-percent increase, the Outback a 33-percent increase, while the Impreza posted a record sales month and the most gains with a 41-percent sales increase, with the Forester continuing to bring in strong sales with an increase of 36-percent, which also represented a monthly record.

“July’s record results built on the momentum we've established this year. The month started strong and gained momentum with the 2010 Legacy and Outback launches. We were in a position for a very good month already, but when the CARS program hit, things went to the next level,” said Tim Colbeck, senior vice president of sales, Subaru of America, Inc. “Our success this month reflects the strength of the Subaru model line-up. The Subaru Impreza and Forester models set monthly records while the brand new Legacy and Outback are off to a strong start.”

Subaru, plans to offer a hybrid based on the technology that underpins the Toyota Prius.

The two automakers have long had an alliance to share vehicle development, production and supplies. Ikuo Mori, president and CEO of Fuji Heavy, says his company will draw on that partnership to offer a gas-electric vehicle.

“We will take advantage of our alliance with Toyota,” he told reporters in Japan, according to the Wall Street Journal. Toyota owns a 16 percent stake in Subaru, but so far the partnership hasn’t borne much fruit when it comes to gas-electric. One industry insider told us Toyota, which holds 80 percent of the hybrid market, has been reluctant to share the technology.

The announcement follows the Obama Administration’s plan to significantly tighten fuel economy and emissions regulations. The rules, brokered with help from the auto industry, increase the average fuel economy of new cars and trucks to 35.5 mpg within seven years and cut tailpipe emissions by almost 40 percent.

Mori said Subaru also is developing a new diesel engine to meet those emissions rules and will offer it in 2011 or 2012. He did not say which models might get the new drivelines.

Subaru also is testing an electric car, the R1-e (pictured) with an eye toward a possible U.S. release.

Supplies are available and effective immediately, Subaru Parts dealers are required to use a remanufactured unit when the transaxle requires major repair or overhaul, except in the case of a "new" and "in-stock" vehicle in which case dealers should still use a “new” transmission.

Note: Repairs to the front A/T Differential are considered an Assembly repair (See Section 8.4.8 of the CDS Policies & Procedures Manual) and do not require the replacement of a remanufactured transaxle.

Just thought some of you Subaru fans might be interested. The following info comes from a New Zealand newspaper.

Subaru is placing a $3000 premium on diesel over petrol as it launches diesel Euro variants of the Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback models in New Zealand in time for Christmas.

This means the the standard Subaru Legacy Diesel Euro saloon will list at $41,490, the equivalent wagon at $42,990, and the Subaru Outback Diesel Euro at $44,990.

The "Euro'' moniker reflects the fact that Subaru's main reason for adding diesel to its range has been pressure from Europe, where diesels account for as much as 50% of new-car sales, compared with 15% here.

The same Subaru diesel engine will feature in all Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback variants. A 2-litre direct injection boxer-configuration unit, it produces 100kW of power and 350Nm of torque, and will operate in conjunction with a five-speed manual transmission.

A standard cycle economy figure of 5.6 litres per 100km is claimed for the Subaru Legacy saloon, which will make it the most fuel-efficient diesel 4WD vehicle on sale in New Zealand.

The European specification adds some features not seen in the equivalent petrol Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback models. These include heated front seats and a front windscreen de-icer.

As is the case with the recently launched diesel variants in Toyota's Corolla range, the indicator/lights and wiper stalks are the reverse of the petrol models.

Stability programming, anti-lock brakes, six airbags, a power-operated driver's seat, climate air-conditioning, and a six-stack MP3-compatible CD sound system are all standard on the Euro models, which also feature dual exhausts and sit on 17-inch alloy wheels.

Diesel variants of the Subaru Impreza and Subaru Forester models are scheduled for launch in the second half of 2009.
